Why we started

Hello. We are Hale Clothing. (After a year of hard work it feels pretty good to say that!). Paul and I first came together in 2016 with one clear goal: to create great looking, great fitting, high quality menswear for athletic fit, muscular guys.

Hello. We are Hale Clothing. (After a year of hard work it feels pretty good to say that!). Paul and I first came together in 2016 with one clear goal: to create great looking, great fitting, high quality menswear for athletic fit, muscular guys.

Being club rugby fanatics and gym regulars, we were both fed up from years of shared personal frustration trying to find post-workout clothing that actually fit us properly. How is it that we train hard, look after ourselves and get so badly let down by what we wear the moment we step out of the gym or head to the bar after a game.

We weren’t alone. As we found out it’s an extremely common problem faced by guys who like to compete, train or stay in shape. After yet another discussion in the gym about badly fitting clothes that Paul had recently been forced into buying because there wasn’t anything else available, that was it. Enough. We both looked at each other and said ‘let’s do something about it’ – and the idea for Hale was born.

Pretty much everything we had ever tried on or bought was always poor in comparison to the stuff we wore in the gym. Big brands didn’t truly cater for our body shape, and the one or two smaller brands that claimed they did didn’t feel like they really understood or cared. And of course, even their clothes still didn’t fit. As a result we always felt much better in the gym or on the pitch than after our workouts and matches.

Honest, healthy and hardworking

Having an idea is one thing, but we needed to understand just how much of an issue this was for other guys in the sport and fitness world. Were people as frustrated as us? What were other brands doing about it? Why wasn’t this being taken seriously? We wanted to know why no-one appeared to be properly focusing on guys like us – part of an increasingly influential and fast growing audience within the multi-million pound health and fitness sector.

A growing trend of looking and feeling good has driven massive popularity and growth for many brands in the ‘wellness sector’ – which now holds a global worth estimated to be around $3.7 trillion dollars.

We spent a few months talking to rugby players, weight lifters, rowers, cyclists, personal trainers and many more people that love to look after themselves and keep in good shape. We researched the market, sports brands, fashion brands, went to expos and conducted surveys. We completely immersed ourselves in the industry. Was this a common issue for people? In the end it was pretty simple – almost everyone we had spoken to had stories of bad experiences with menswear. Most were irritated and frustrated. No-one was offering a solution. Even the very few brands that were had been doing it badly. We went for it.

An early sketch from Greg detailing the many frustrations men with his body shape have to deal with whenever they are buying clothes.

Four friends

Once we created Hale our passion became an obsession. We recruited the third member of our team, a close friend and experienced brand consultant and designer David, to help us turn what was still just an idea into a brand with a clear aim, purpose and vision, distilling learnings from extensive research and our encounters with many frustrated people from across the health and fitness world. This has helped us develop an approach that we felt reflected our own and that of our audience.

Our values: Honesty, Reliability, quality, strength and wellbeing

Last but certainly not least, Fred joined the team earlier in the year to take on the most important job of them all – conceptualising, designing and creating our first athletic fit menswear range. We found Fred in the most appropriate way possible; he was the gym buddy of a gym buddy. Having measured, designed and fitted two Lions squads as the lead designer at Thomas Pink, he also has over 20 years of experience working for some of the leading brands and retailers in the men’s fashion industry and has recently transformed his own health and fitness.

Fred’s experience, enthusiasm and relentless focus on quality has proven invaluable and driven us all on to create a unique range that looks great and works with our body shape, rather than against it.

We worked very closely with Rugby players, personal trainers, and other sport fanatics in taking accurate body measurements and understanding proportion of the athletic physique to create the exact patterns for our garments. We want our guys to look effortlessly sharp with no limitation of physical restriction wearing our products.

Creating a community

Through our extensive contact list built on professional relationships and friendships as far back as school, we have managed to create a cross-industry network that has helped enabled us to develop, and keep developing the brand and clothes that speak to our target market. We’ve involved as many of our audience as possible in every stage of our brand and product development. This has ensured we stay true to what’s important for them (and us) with the aim of creating a diverse and collaborative community that can spur us on to do exciting things.

We’re only just getting started

As I write this, we’re putting the finishing touches to our masterplan for our first big reveal early next year. David and Paul are looking into how we can develop our brand, expanding on our open and collaborative approach with the most important people, our audience, through pop-up events, social sessions, expos and more.

Fred is working hard with our suppliers testing, refining and developing samples and prototypes for our first range ready for upcoming fitting sessions with input from some of our key brand ambassadors and advocates from the world of sport and fitness to make sure that our products will be the best they can possibly be – designed by athletic fit men, for athletic fit men.
