Effortless style, perfect fit: creating a new kind of athletic fit menswear

As much as we all like dressing and wearing beautiful clothes, the form and function of these garments are often of poor standard. The human body and the way it moves creates certain limitations on what we can wear. These limitations are amplified even further if we don’t ‘conform’ to the industry interpretation of the average body shape.

As much as we all like dressing and wearing beautiful clothes, the form and function of these garments are often of poor standard. The human body and the way it moves creates certain limitations on what we can wear. These limitations are amplified even further if we don’t ‘conform’ to the industry interpretation of the average body shape.

As a result, one of the biggest tests in my career was dressing the British and Irish Lions (not once, but twice!) when I was running the design team at Thomas Pink (LVMH). It challenged my thinking on shape and fit and made me realise how important comfort is when wearing your day to day clothes.

Working closely with the players and listening to their observations when wearing their everyday clothes, it was clear that they all shared some serious frustrations when it came to finding clothes that not only fit properly, but were comfortable, fashionable and made to last. The more I got to know them during the entire process of designing and developing the range it was clear that there was a niche in the market for guys that didn’t ‘conform’ because of a more athletic, muscular build. Guys who were being almost completely ignored in the menswear market.

We are working very closely with Premiership level rugby players, renowned personal trainers, and other sport fanatics in taking accurate body measurements and really understanding the proportion of the athletic physique to create the right fit for our garments.

This is exactly why I was so excited by the opportunity of addressing these frustrations when Greg first started talking to me about his ideas for Hale. We have a fantastic opportunity to create a new direction for athletic fit menswear, creating product ranges that will speak for themselves with a fit that not only complements our audiences body shape but most importantly gives the wearer a sense of comfort, effortless style and ease.

One of our key aims is to ensure guys look and feel effortlessly sharp when wearing our clothes. The look we are developing is understated and elegant, focusing on the silhouette in a ‘tailored’ fashion rather than in a tight-fitting, restrictive and unsubtle way. We are working very closely with Premiership level rugby players, renowned personal trainers and other sport fanatics in taking accurate body measurements and gathering feedback to ensure we really understand the proportions and needs of guys with an athletic physique to create the right fit and style for our garments.

Creased, skin tight, boxy and uncomfortable vs. Quietly casual, adaptable, great fitting and comfortable

Fit is incredibly important, but it must be supported by a strong focus on quality, style and durability. During the development process we have viewed hundreds of different fabrics and samples. We will only ever use fabrics of the highest quality that also provide an element of natural performance. This goes hand in hand with the unique way that we construct our garments to guarantee comfort and effortless style.

Our first collection features high quality Italian fabrics and focusses on a man’s wardrobe staples including all the hard working essentials: shirts, jeans, chinos and polos. Our central philosophy is to maintain this core group of products season after season, building new and exciting ranges as we grow. Our sourcing strategy is close to home and ethical the whole way, in line with our own values.

I believe that the future for Hale Clothing and the emerging athletic fit menswear industry as a whole is incredibly exciting, especially as we keep exploring, innovating, developing and working closely with our ambassadors and customers on honing the ‘perfect’ fit across our launch range and future products. Our goal is to keep exciting, engaging and delivering for our target audience, bringing that extra special piece of clothing into their life – whilst staying true to our values and philosophy.

I can’t wait to share our brand new range with you all early next year!
